Description

“Richly costumed and dramatically effective…Botstein, leading the American Symphony Orchestra, an impressive cast and the excellent Bard Festival Chorale, made a compelling case for the piece.”New York Times, August 2021

First premiered in 1903, this richly lyrical opera by French composer Ernest Chausson was widely considered one of the finest examples of French romanticism but had inexplicably fallen from the repertory.

Staged by the dynamic young director Louisa Proske, the 2021 Bard SummerScape production (and first-ever fully staged US performances) garnered rapturous accolades from public and press alike for the moving portrayal of King Arthur’s betrayal by his queen Genièvre and his trusted knight Lancelot.

Performed by a stellar cast, helmed by baritone Norman Garrett in the titular role, mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke as Queen Genievre and tenor Matthew White as Lancelot, this superb production is now available on HD video.

Directed by the acclaimed video director and producer Habib Azar, the HD video brings thrillingly to life the complex collision between idealism, treachery, honor, and perfidy. This digital release also includes interviews with various cast members and music director Leon Botstein. Not to be missed.

“This opera is a masterwork.” OperaWire, August 2021
