Description
Presented in partnership with Bryant Park for the Picnic Performances series, the American Symphony Orchestra presents a memorial concert on the 25th anniversary of September 11th. While serving as an occasion for remembrance and reflection, the evening’s musical program also celebrates the enduring strength of the human spirit. The majesty of Aaron Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man, the anguished beauty of Gustav Mahler’s Adagio from the composer’s tenth symphony, the poignancy of George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, and additional scores, together pay tribute to the resilience, dignity, and contributions of ordinary Americans, as well as the courage and sacrifice of the heroes of 9/11.
Bryant Park staff lends out hundreds of free picnic blankets, provides ample bistro chairs, and offers a curated selection of food and drink to purchase from local vendors. No tickets are required and there are no lines to enter: it’s as easy as a walk in the park.
This program will repeat on September 13, 2026 at Kupferberg Center for the Arts.
The ASO’s Vanguard Series is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the Office of the Governor and the New York State Legislature.
This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
